General. The following hypothetical examples teach this concept:

Hypothetical Example No. 1. Isaac records a book on a diskette in spoken form. He is informed that the International Search Authority will not search the invention and that the International Preliminary Examining Authority will not carry out an international preliminary examination of it.

Hypothetical Example No. 2. Albert writes a song and records it. He is informed that the International Search Authority will not search the invention and that the International Preliminary Examining Authority will not carry out an international preliminary examination of it.

Hypothetical Example No. 3. Henry discovers a telegraph apparatus or communication system characterized by the use of a novel code to represent the characters. He is informed that the International Search Authority will search the invention and that the International Preliminary Examining Authority will carry out an international preliminary examination of it.

Hypothetical Example No. 4. Dorothea invents a measuring instrument designed to produce a particular form of graph for representing the measured information. She attempts to claim the instrument and the graph in an international patent application. She is informed that the instrument will be searched and examined, but the graph will not be searched or examined.
