General. The following hypothetical examples teach this concept:
Hypothetical Example No. 1. Isaac discovers a new variety of petunia. He is informed that the International Search Authority will not search the invention and that the International Preliminary Examining Authority will not carry out an international preliminary examination of it.
Hypothetical Example No. 2. Albert discovers a new variety of pigeon. He is informed that the International Search Authority will not search the invention and that the International Preliminary Examining Authority will not carry out an international preliminary examination of it.
Hypothetical Example No. 3. Henry discovers a method of crossing breeding horses involving merely selecting for breeding and bringing together animals that have certain characteristics. He is informed that the International Search Authority will search the invention and that the International Preliminary Examining Authority will carry out an international preliminary examination of it.
Hypothetical Example No. 4. Dorothea discovers a new variety of tree and a new method of pruning it. She attempts to claim the tree variety and the method of pruning it in an international patent application. She is informed that the method will be searched and examined, but the new variety of tree will not be searched or examined.
