Why - Preferred Embodiment(s) of the Invention

Inventions are typically disclosed by making reference to numbered elements (in the case of a product) or steps (in the case of a process) depicted on one or more drawings. It is prudent to disclose all possible variations of an invention to make it more difficult for others to obtain patents on non-obvious improvements to the invention already envisioned (but not mentioned) by the original inventor.
